ZWV held its first community meeting on the exploration of the feasibility of starting a Reuse Facility on island. It was well attended and we are grateful to all that volunteered to help this project move forward.

Zero Waste Vashon is exploring the possibility of helping start a Reuse Facility on island that sells good quality, used building materials like windows, doors, flooring, electrical and plumbing fixtures, cabinets, etc. We have been visiting and talking with existing stores in western WA for guidance, best practices, and options. This process has been inspiring. There are a lot of success stories in our state. The goal of this program is to save good items from the landfill and make them available for islander projects at a low cost. We call this new project – Grandpa’s Garage.

In October 2025 we applied for a King County Solid Waste grant to assist us in moving this project forward. We are excited to announce that we were chosen to receive a 2026 Re+ Seed grant. Re+ is King County’s approach to building a healthy environment and economy by reinventing our system of waste management. Nearly 70% of the building materials currently brought to our regional landfill could be reused, recycled, or composted. Through Re+, we’re deepening our waste prevention and reduction methods, finding innovative ways to match materials with end markets, and, in doing so, we’re reducing climate emissions and helping create new opportunities in a greener economy.

ZWV is wrapping up work on the feasibility and business plans. We have some important news about grant aquisition, partnerships, and guidance that will be discussed at a Community Meeting on Sept. 2nd, at 6pm at the Land Trust.  Community ideas, thoughts, and help are welcome and will be necessary to make this dream become a sustainable and successful community asset for our island. Contact us at: reuse@zerowastevashon.org with your suggestions & ideas. If you can help, let us know! It will take a village to make this grow.
