Single Use Plastics
Choose Plastics Free
Single Use Plastics, an editorial by Terry Sullivan
Choose Plastic Free is a year long Zero Waste Vashon campaign beginning in 2023, aimed to reduce single use plastic waste on Vashon. The campaign aims to engage all Islanders, including youth, in making smart choices about their consumption. Can I avoid plastic packaging? Is it a non petroleum product? Are there alternatives? Can I reuse or repurpose what I already have? Do I need it? Choose Plastic Free wants to make Islanders think before they purchase.
Why? Because plastic is made of oil, and small changes matter in our efforts to reach zero carbon emissions. We are optimists who think we can all make a contribution.
We welcome other Island organizations and youth groups to be a part of this campaign!
Choose Plastic Free will have four items of focus over a 12 month period beginning January 1, 2023. Each area of focus will be approximately a two month effort and will incorporate alternative solutions.
The campaign’s four areas of focus are:
1.Beverage Containers – Reducing single use coffee cups & plastic bottles
Message: Bring Your Own Cup/Bottle
Directed at Vashon coffee stands and grocery store shoppers, attendees at First Friday, Students, everyone!
2. Single use plastic bags – Reducing produce, other plastic bags
Message: Bring Your Own Produce and Shopping Bags, Reuse Your Bags
Directed at grocery store shoppers
3. Packaging –
Message: Choose non-plastic, buy bulk items, bring your own container
Directed at food shoppers and take out consumers
4. Clothing – Avoid synthetic materials which are petroleum based and contribute to micro plastics via washing
Message: Shop natural materials, second-hand stores to avoid ‘fast fashion’ waste
Directed at clothing buyers
